Mrs. Miriam Duran, Assistant Principal for Curriculum
Mrs. Duran began her career as an English teacher in Philadelphia, PA, in 1998, where she worked at a bilingual middle school—the same middle school where she completed her student teaching. There, she worked in a small learning community and looped with her students, establishing strong ties with students and their families. After three years, she transferred to an inner-city high school where she and a small team of teachers and administrators developed an alternative education program for repeating 9th graders. The program prepared and engaged students through one-on-one instruction and participation in academic field trips to expand students’ horizons.
In 2004, Mrs. Duran relocated to Florida to assist in the opening of Shields. After two years in middle school, she pursued her passion for teaching high school and transferred to Lennard, the feeder high school that was opening that year. There, she added journalism to her repertoire and developed the school’s journalism program. Miriam has also taught at FLVS, Riverview High School and Brandon High School. Mrs. Duran has twenty-one years of experience teaching in both urban and rural settings. She transitioned to administration in the spring of 2019.
Mrs. Duran has served as an Assistant Principal at Shields and Rodgers. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from LaSalle University, a Master of Education from Gratz College, and a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from National Louis University.
Mrs. Duran prides herself on working with students to help them achieve their goals and finds it her purpose in life to assist in the success of others. Beyond her professional achievements, Miriam loves drawing, writing, and riding motorcycles. She also loves dogs and currently has two very energetic Australian Shepherds named Blue and Ruby. Mrs. Duran is married to Kennedy Duran and has four daughters: Victoria, Crystal, Isabella, and Kayla.
