The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) has mandated that each student enrolled in a certificate/diploma program meet minimum basic academic skill levels in reading and mathematics in order to receive a Certificate of Completion or Applied Technology Diploma. A chart that shows the levels for each Post-secondary Career Certificate Programs (PCCP) offered at Erwin is available in the Appendix of the School Catalog, on the school’s website, and in hardcopy in the Student Services office.

Unless exempt, all students must take the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) within 6 weeks of enrolling in a PCCP. CASAS is a test that measures the basic academic skill levels regarding Reading and Math.  CASAS scores are valid for 12 months. Students who are not exempt must meet a minimum score prior to graduation.

If a prospective student does not meet the basic requirements for a specific program, he/she is encouraged to begin remediation as soon as possible. Applicants are referred to The Learning Center (TLC) at Erwin for assistance. Test results are used to create an individual education plan for remediation. Students register for The Learning Center on a first-come, first-served basis, as space permits. 

CASAS Exemptions

Students are exempt from the CASAS if they:

• Entered 9^th grade in a Florida public school in the 2003-2004 school year, or any year thereafter, and earned a Florida Standard High School Diploma
• Possess a college degree at the associate level or higher from an accredited post-secondary institution 
• Are currently serving as an active-duty member of any branch of the United States Armed Services
• Obtain Industry Certification
