Emergency Medical Services Pathway
For students who dream of a fast-paced career as an EMT, Paramedic, or Firefighter, their first step can be to obtain their Emergency Medical Responder certificate on their 18th birthday. With this credential, they can go on to quickly become an EMT-B in one semester and a Paramedic in three semesters. EMRs often perform patient transport duties, such as bringing a person from one hospital to another or transporting a bedridden in-home patient from their home to a doctor's appointment and back. EMTs drive ambulances and give patients basic assistance, often in emergency situations. Paramedics perform all emergency life-saving duties, from stopping bleeding at a car accident scene to responding if someone has had a heart attack, stroke, or fall within their home. Paramedics also may work in hospitals, especially in the Emergency Room where they can quickly intubate patients and start IV lines.
