A Hillsborough County Public School
Students who are interested in becoming an EKG (electrocardiogram) Technician should follow this pathway. Any student who hopes to eventually attend medical school to specialize in cardiology or "be a heart surgeon" will benefit from this pathway as well. EKG Technicians are trained in how to follow the prescribing physician's orders to properly hook up EKG machines to monitor patients by properly placing sensors and connecting leads so that an accurate reading can be obtained. Students will learn about how our hearts function in detail and be able to properly interpret graphs of cardiac activity (electrocardiographs). Pay for an EKG technician in Florida starts at $20 an hour an increases as the technician proves their skills and gains work experience.
There is not a state or nationally required exam for EKG technicians, although earning a voluntary certification will increase employability and earning potential.
Florida A & M University offers an all-online EKG Tech course which includes a voucher to take the CET or CETS exam: FAMU EKG Tech
