HCPS Green Teams

The Green Team initiative launched during the 2022-2023 school year to engage students and staff in having an active role in school energy conservation and sustainability. Each Green Team lead has volunteered for this position. The powerED team supports school Green Team leads by providing resources, direct engagement, and regular meetings. The HCPS Green Team channel is available on Teams and provides regular and open communication between schools and the district related to energy education and environmental stewardship.

Green Team Leads work with McKinstry to implement the powerED program that aims to promote a district-wide commitment to sustainability.

We welcome guest speakers from various community organizations to present at our monthly HCPS Green Team Lead meetings with the goal of increasing awareness of these activities and their groups.  Creating Champions of Environmental Stewardship is the foundation of the HCPS Green Team project.

As part of HCPS sustainability efforts, all schools and facilities are expected to form a Green Team and have a Green Team Lead supporting the district goals and efforts on a site-by-site basis. School Green Team Leads play a critical role impacting HCPS sustainability and   energy conservation goals in our schools and facilities. The Green Team goal is to provide students and staff the opportunity to learn about Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability in a personal and tangible way.

    What is a Green Team?
This is a group of staff and students at each school that champions energy conservation, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. This group meets consistently and may have a variety of different activities they collaborate on throughout the year. The objective of all activities is to educate students and staff as well as create an environmental impact at each school or site.

    Why is this important?
Green Teams are part of our district’s initiative to become more energy efficient and sustainable in the years to come. Efforts at the school level benefit our schools, staff, and students directly. With high participation, we can also continue our efforts to be recognized by Florida Green Schools.

How do you start a Green Team?
School or facility administrators will identify a Green Team Lead at the beginning of each school year. This is your staff member that will facilitate green team meetings or activities on a regular basis. Speak to your school or building administrator if you are interested in joining a Green Team.

The powerED team supports all HCPS Green Team Leads through regular meetings, individual training or support, and a comprehensive Green Team guide. Please reach out to the HCPS powerED team for support, training and to learn more about the FREE opportunities and resources for your Green Team.
