Office of School Improvement

  • The Office of School Improvement supports schools in engaging in a systematic and collaborative approach to improving student performance and the overall effectiveness of schools.

  • School Advisory Council
    The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a partnership between the school and the community it serves. The SAC is responsible for assisting with the annual preparation, implementation, and evaluation of the School Improvement Plan. (2F.S.§1001.452). The SAC membership is representative of the ethnic, racial, and economic community served by the school and the majority of SAC members are non-school district employees. SAC meetings follow Florida’s Open Government Sunshine Law.

    School Improvement Plan
    Hillsborough County’s School Board Policy 2120 requires the implementation of a School Improvement Plan (SIP) for each school in the district. The School Improvement Plan provides a means for all district schools to create a plan of action to improve student achievement. In partnership, the School Advisory Council (SAC), school leadership team, and staff analyze the school’s data and engage in problem-solving. Schools identify, implement, and progress monitor specific areas of focus, measurable outcomes, strategies, and action steps in the SIP throughout the school year. The SIP is used as a living, breathing document as it is reviewed, modified, and adjusted throughout the school year. The SIP is a fluid document, not a static document, adjusted to meet the identified needs, based on data. Each school’s School Improvement Plan is located in the state of Florida's website: https://cims2.floridacims.org once the state publishes them.

    Florida School Recognition Funds (A+ Funds)
    Florida Statute 1008.36, Florida School Recognition Program, describes the state legislature’s allocation of funds for schools with improved student performance. In Hillsborough County, we refer to this funding as A+ Funds.  The state determines if and when funds are granted. The staff and school advisory council at each recognized school jointly decide how to use the financial award.  As specified in statute, schools must use their awards for one or any combination of the following:

    • nonrecurring bonuses to the faculty and staff;
    • nonrecurring expenditures for educational equipment or materials to assist in maintaining and improving student performance; or
    • temporary personnel for the school to assist in maintaining and improving student performance.
